LOCOtuinen Maastricht

LOCOtuinen Maastricht

LOCOtuinen Maastricht is a cooperative self-picking garden situated at De Poshoof in Maastricht Oud-Caberg. This initiative brings together farmers and citizens to collaboratively produce healthy, local, and fair food using sustainable and ecological methods, ensuring no chemical pesticides or artificial fertilizers are used. The project operates on a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model, promoting a stronger connection to food production.

Individuals can participate by becoming members of the cooperative and acquiring a Harvest Share Subscription, which grants access to approximately 30 weeks of self-picking. There are also temporary arrangements available for non-members and special discounted subscriptions for students, alongside a 4-week trial option. Members receive weekly updates detailing the vegetables ready for harvest, which they can then pick themselves between sunrise and sunset.

The garden cultivates a wide variety of seasonal produce for self-picking, including:

  • Leafy greens: Green oak leaf lettuce, various lettuce types, endive, spinach, winter purslane, yellow and red Swiss chard, bok choy, Chinese cabbage, and kale.
  • Cabbage and related crops: Broccoli, cauliflower, pointed cabbage, red cabbage, Brussels sprouts, savoy cabbage, and kohlrabi (including purple varieties).
  • Root and tuber vegetables: Beets, carrots, radishes, celeriac, and daikon radish.
  • Legumes: Snow peas and green beans.
  • Other vegetables: Fennel bulb, celery, zucchini, leek, flowersprouts, and spring onion.

Notably, potatoes and onions are not grown for self-picking on the farm, as they can be obtained from De Poshoof’s farm shop. The garden focuses on maximizing its space to provide a diverse and abundant yield for its members.

Lubosch Land

  • 15.2 km — limburg
Lubosch Land is a nature-inclusive family farm located in Ransdaal, Zuid-Limburg, dedicated to sustainable agriculture, biodiversity, and healthy food production. Established in 2021, the farm aims to actively contribute to a more sustainable food chain by working with nature and the local community. The farm features several key areas: A Food Forest (Voedselbos): Planted with numerous trees and shrubs since 2021, this area is designed to produce a diverse range of perennial and woody species, including fruits, nuts, seeds, leaves, and stems. While it will take many years for the forest to fully mature, the first harvests are anticipated after about five years. Currently, guided wild foraging walks are organized where visitors can learn about and taste existing wild edibles. A Market Garden (Tuinderij): Here, annual crops are cultivated entirely without pesticides, following permaculture principles and focusing on soil health. Produce grown includes various vegetables, herbs, flowers, and fruits. Specific items mentioned are collard greens, chard, beans, lettuce, kohlrabi, and different types of cabbage. Additionally, perennial fruit bushes yield redcurrants, gooseberries, Japanese wineberries, and other currants. Natural Farming Project Fields: These fields, established in 2023 and 2024, adhere to “Do-Nothing Farming” principles, emphasizing collaboration with nature and minimal intervention. Produce from the farm’s own land, including unsprayed vegetables and fruits from the market garden, is sold at the Lubosch Land Farm Shop (Boerderijwinkel). The shop, housed in a renovated former cow shed, also offers a seasonal and rotating assortment of other organic and local products like dairy, beverages, preserves, and baked goods. Customers can purchase ready-made vegetable boxes (groentetassen) for 2 or 4 people, filled with seasonal produce. If a specific item is not displayed, the farm team can harvest it fresh for customers.
